~ prep 1 used with verbs expressing movement meaning in or on a particular place  (The men managed to jump onto the train while it was moving. | Some paint was dripping off the ceiling onto the floor.) 2 a) be onto sb informal to know who did something wrong, committed a crime etc  (The police are onto him.) b) be/get onto sb especially BrE to get in contact with someone  (Get onto the hospital and see if they can spare extra nurses.) 3 be onto a good thing/a winner informal to be in a very good situation that gives you many advantages  (She's onto a real winner with that job.) 4 if something such as a room looks or gives onto another room, a view etc, that is what you can see from that room or where that room leads  (The main sitting area looked out onto a beautiful view of the hills.)
